The Royal Emeralds

Gemstone

Emerald (Panna)

Ruling Planet

Mercury (Budh)

For over three centuries, the royal courts of Jaipur and the great Maharajas of Rajasthan assembled some of the most extraordinary emerald collections ever known to the world. Their treasures did not merely represent wealth; they embodied a profound cosmological understanding of stone, planet, and destiny.

The Pink City of Jaipur has been, for centuries, the gemstone capital of the world. The Jaipur Gem Palace, founded in 1852 under royal patronage, served the Maharajas of Rajputana, the Nizam of Hyderabad, and eventually the global elite. At the center of these royal collections, again and again, were emeralds: deep, vivid Panna from the mines of Colombia, Egypt, and Zambia.

The Mughal emperors before them had established the template. Emeralds were considered sacred to the Mughals. They engraved prayers and verses from the Quran onto their stones, creating some of the most extraordinary carved emeralds in human history. The most famous among these, the Mogul Mughal Emerald (1695), weighing 217.80 carats, was auctioned at Christie's London in 2001 for over $2.2 million. Jaipur's royal families inherited and expanded this tradition with equal reverence.

In Vedic astrology, the Emerald belongs to Mercury (Budh), the planet of intellect, communication, commerce, and quick thinking. Mercury rules those who lead through wit and wisdom rather than force alone. The Maharajas of Rajasthan were not merely warriors; they were diplomats, administrators, patrons of arts, and master negotiators. The Panna was their talisman of governance.

The City Palace Museum in Jaipur today displays only a fraction of what was once held in the royal treasury. Visitors describe rooms where emerald-studded garments, ceremonial weapons, and altar pieces filled every surface: an ocean of green fire representing centuries of royal devotion to this singular stone.

At Radha Rani Heritage Collection, our Panna collection draws on this centuries-old heritage. We source certified, untreated Colombian and Zambian emeralds of deep saturation, high clarity, and strong natural colour. Each stone comes with a full gemological certificate and our own heritage assessment document detailing its provenance and astrological properties.

"From the royal courts of Rajasthan to modern collectors, emeralds have always spoken the language of permanence."
